Global mattress manufacturing and retail group Somnigroup International, formerly known as Tempur Sealy International, Inc., has reported a growth in fourth sales while income slightly decreased.

According to its latest trading update for Q4 ended 31 December 2024, total sale rose 3.2% to $1.2bn from $1.1bn against the same period in 2023.

North America net sales were consistent at $894.1m as compared to $895.4m in the fourth quarter of 2023, primarily driven by continued macroeconomic pressure impacting US consumer behaviour.

International net sales increased a robust 14.1% to $313.8m as compared to $275.1m, primarily driven by the success of new product launches.

Gross margin was 43.3% as compared to 43.8%, while net income decreased 6.7% to $71.9m as compared to $77.1m in the fourth quarter of 2023.

As for the full year, total sales rose 0.1% to $4.93bn from $4.92bn, with net income up 4.4% to $384.3m from $368.1m.

Company Chairman and CEO Scott Thompson commented: “We are pleased to report another strong quarter with market leading sales growth and double digit adjusted EPS growth. Our 2024 results are reflective of the strong fundamentals of our business model as we delivered record sales and gross margins while the industry is experiencing trough volumes.”

“On February 5, 2025, we completed the acquisition of Mattress Firm, the nation’s largest mattress specialty retailer. This is a significant milestone – with the acquisition of Mattress Firm we are now clearly the world’s largest bedding company, with superior capabilities in design, manufacturing, distribution and retail, and a portfolio of the most highly recognized brands in the industry.”

Global furniture retailer Wayfair has reported an increase in fourth quarter sales while full year revenues declined.

According to its latest trading update for the fourth quarter ended 31 December 2024, total sales rose 0.2% to $3.1bn, an uptick of $7m against the same period last year.

US net revenue of $2.7bn, increased $30m, up 1.1% year over year, while International net revenue stood at $381m, down $23m or by 5.7%. Net losses for the quarter were $128m.

Active customers totalled 21.4 million in the period, a decrease of 4.5%, while repeat customers placed 8.5 million orders, a decrease of 5.6%.

As for the full year, total sales were down 1.3% to $11.9bn, a reduction of $152m. US sales were down 1% to $10.4bn, while International sales fell 2.8% to $1.5bn. Net losses stood at $492m.

“The fourth quarter was a strong conclusion to the year across multiple fronts. From a topline performance perspective, we ended 2024 on a high note – with net revenue showing positive year-over-year growth. These results enabled us to drive nearly $100 million dollars of adjusted EBITDA in the quarter, and deliver on our goal of approximately 50% year-over-year dollar growth for 2024,” said Niraj Shah, CEO, co-founder and co-chairman, Wayfair.

“Our strong financial performance enabled us to tap into the high yield markets for the first time, putting us in the strongest balance sheet position in many years. We’re making smart, high return investments across the business, and at the same time remain committed to growing adjusted EBITDA dollars year-over-year. We are confident this approach sets us up well for a compelling payoff over 2025 and are excited to bring all of our stakeholders with us on this next leg of the Wayfair journey.”

Global upholstery manufacturer La-Z-Boy Incorporated has reported strong third quarter results.

According to its latest Q3 trading update for the period ended 25 January 2025, sales totalled $522m, growing 4% against the prior year comparable period. Operating margin was 6.7% for the quarter on a GAAP basis.

Net income resulted at $28.4m, down from $28.6m. The company returned $90m to shareholders year-to-date, up approximately 40% versus the prior year comparable period.

Written sales trends sequentially accelerated, with third quarter total written sales for the Retail segment (company-owned La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries®) increasing 15% versus a year ago and written same-store sales (which exclude the impact of newly opened stores and newly acquired stores) up 7% versus a year ago.

Sales strength was broad based with all key markets posting positive same-store sales trends driven by strong execution and sequential improvements in traffic. Written same-store sales for the entire La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries® network also increased 5% versus the year ago period. Performance continues to outpace the broader industry with market share gains in the quarter.

Looking ahead, Taylor Luebke, SVP and Chief Financial Officer of La-Z-Boy Incorporated, added: “Our strong written trends and sequential acceleration in our Retail and Wholesale businesses is a testament that our Century Vision strategy is enabling us to outperform the industry. We will continue to focus on growing our core La-Z-Boy brand by disproportionately expanding our Retail segment and driving strategic, compatible distribution in the Wholesale segment.

“We delivered results above a year ago and at the higher end of our sales and margin expectations for the quarter despite continued challenging macro conditions. Our expectation is for industry trends to remain under pressure, though we expect to continue to outpace the industry. Assuming no significant changes in tariffs, we expect fiscal fourth quarter sales to be in the range of $545-565 million and Non-GAAP operating margin to be in the range of 8.5-9.5%.”

Melinda D. Whittington, Board Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of La-Z-Boy Incorporated, commented: “Our third quarter results reflect the steady progress we have made to build a more agile business, create our own momentum, and drive growth in what is still a challenged environment. We delivered sales growth across each of our segments, punctuated by strong Retail same-store sales. This was driven by solid conversion rates, average ticket, and design sales, all of which improved again year-over-year.

“Additionally, within our Wholesale segment, our core North America La-Z-Boy brand continues to post sales growth and margin expansion. Our vertically integrated model reinforces the unique strength of our iconic brand and positions us to disproportionately benefit when the market rebounds. We are a trusted solution for a growing number of consumers and will remain steadfast in our mission of bringing the transformational power of comfort to people, homes, and communities.

“As we look to the future, our brand, and its well-known attributes of comfort and quality, will be further supported by our expanding consumer insights. We believe this is creating a flywheel with improved innovation, strong speed to market, and improved brand reach and profitability. While underlying housing fundamentals remain challenged, we are focused on solving for the unique needs of the consumer with comfort and quality and controlling what we can control with strong execution.

“This is the foundation to what has led La-Z-Boy Incorporated to be successful for the past century and will continue to be the cornerstone of our philosophy for our Century Vision strategy and next 100 years.”

Award-winning US bedding brand Purecare talks about the importance of wellness and how retailers can adopt this movement to boost sales.

From award-winning products to informative blogs on sleep and wellbeing, Purecare is on a mission to improve the sleep and wellness of its customers. Having launched in the UK market back in January 2024, the brand has recently concluded another successfully January Furniture Show at Birmingham’s NEC.

Displaying its collection of mattress protectors, innovative pillows and bed sheets, Purecare also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of wellness within the home and how retailers can take advantage of this growing movement where mental health, sleep and general wellbeing are more important than ever. It’s a culture shift that Purecare’s products are a perfect fit for.

“With every fiber of our being – with every stitch of our fabric – we care about the wellbeing of everybody and every body,” says Johan Bosman, Senior Vice President of Global Business Development. “We start with the most premium materials and finesse each product with precision-fit™ design features before finishing with outstanding quality control.

“From our award-winning aromatherapy-enhanced mattress protection, to supple sheets and patented pillows, our products are designed to take care of you.”

In fact, the UK has seen significant growth of its wellness market since the pandemic. In 2022, its wellness industry reached 131% of its pre-pandemic (2019) market value, ranking first globally, according to data from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). The UK was also one of the two fastest-growing wellness markets since 2020, growing 19.4% annually, just behind Mexico at 25.2%.

The UK wellness market hit a record valuation of $170.5 billion (£138.7bn) in the pre-pandemic year of 2019, which has grown to $224 billion (£182bn) in 2022. “The UK has one of the world’s largest, most diverse, and resilient wellness economies. The British public are very sophisticated wellness consumers,” said Katherine Johnston, GWI senior researcher.

One area of wellness UK consumers are investing in is sleep. Before we dive into the products and benefits of Purecare’s solutions, Johan defines what sleep wellness actually means. “For some, sleep wellness simply means ensuring that we’re getting plenty of quality sleep each night. For others, it’s much more than that. For us, the definition falls somewhere in between.

“Sleep wellness includes things like assessing our unique sleep needs and setting realistic sleep goals, investing in high-quality bedding that helps us reach our sleep goals, and engaging in healthy lifestyle choices that contribute to better, whole-person health.

“It takes into account not only the things we must do to sleep well, but the things we must do to rise to the challenges of our days, too.

“Sleep has the power to restore your body and reset your mind, both of which are essential benefits that help you face the challenges of the day, every day. So, when thinking about sleep wellness, we invite you to think about it as a well-rounded experience.

“Yes, getting quality sleep is essential. But more than that, getting quality sleep isn’t nearly as cut-and-dry as it’s often thought to be. (This means that buying a set of run of the mill cotton sheets simply won’t do the trick.)

“Here’s the truth: The surfaces we sleep on, the environment we sleep in, the comfort essentials we choose, and the mindset we have when we’re gearing up to go to bed all contribute to our sleep experience, and they matter too.

“That’s what Sleep Wellness for us at Purecare is all about. More than anything, we care about you and your wellbeing. This is why we’re devoted to helping you build the foundation of better sleep with premium bedding made from responsive materials that provide you with a cleaner sleep environment while supporting your wellness goals and unique lifestyle day and night.”

Purecare’s award-winning OmniGuard Advance Mattress Protector is a prime example after being recognised with the Good Housekeeping Approved Award 2024. “The OmniGuard Advance 5-Sided Mattress Protector stands out for its exceptional protective features, creating a barrier against moisture, allergens, dust mites, mould, and mildew,” says Johan. “This comprehensive protection ensures a cleaner, healthier sleep environment, which is essential for maintaining a hygienic bedroom space. The mattress protector is designed to fit like a fitted sheet, making it compatible with both adjustable and standard bases, and accommodating various mattress depths.

“The five-sided protection of the OmniGuard Advance Mattress Protector offers unparalleled coverage, shielding not only the top but also the sides of your mattress from spills, stains, and allergens. This extensive safeguarding is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers and those who prioritise maintaining a clean and comfortable sleeping environment. By extending the life of your mattress, this protector is a wise investment for any bedroom.”

The Good Housekeeping Institute’s rigorous testing process, known for its thoroughness, evaluated the OmniGuard Advance 5-Sided Mattress Protector across several key parameters, including durability, effectiveness, and ease of use. The protector excelled in repelling liquids, resisting allergens, and maintaining its quality even after multiple washes. This recognition assures consumers that Purecare’s products not only meet but exceed industry standards, offering reliability and peace of mind.

“This Good Housekeeping Approved Award 2024is a testament to Purecare’s innovative approach and the superior performance of our products,” Johan said. “We are proud to add this honour to our growing list of accolades as we continue to deliver sleep solutions that prioritise health, comfort, and quality.”

Another product collection making waves within its portfolio is its three advanced cooling pillows, each designed to elevate the sleep experience. The pillows bring cutting-edge cooling technology to the forefront, raising the bar for sleep comfort.

“The Nano Memory Foam Pillow features Memory Foam Crumb and PureCool thermoregulating fabric, delivering optimal comfort and advanced temperature regulation,” Johan said. “The Groove Contouring Memory Foam Pillow is designed for front sleepers, offering adaptive support with a thinner core and strategic zoning.

“The Wave Pillow integrates dual layers of Gel Memory Foam and Memory Foam, providing targeted pressure relief for side and back sleepers. The cool-to-the-touch surface adds an extra layer of luxury, creating an unparalleled sleep experience.”

Furthermore, Purecare’s range of new luxury bed sheets, launched at last month’s JFS, are renowned for their perfect blend of softness, durability, and breathability, offering retailers an opportunity to enhance their offerings with premium sleep solutions.

“Through our innovative wellness-focused products, retailers can educate their customers on what it means to sleep with a Purecare product,” Johan said. “Quality and care are the foundation of our sleep essentials and by encouraging customers to enhance their own sleep wellness and experience, retailers will see the benefit too.”

Alongside these product innovations, Purecare celebrated outstanding achievements last year, as well as making a significant leap by joining the Minerva Buying Group as an approved supplier, further solidifying its position as a trusted partner for retailers. The brand also became the only official mattress protector supplier to the AIS Buying Group, in the Beds Category, enhancing its presence further.

“We’re excited for the year ahead following a fantastic breakthrough during 2024,” adds Johan. “We produce products with sleep wellness that comes from the heart and we’ll continue our development journey with wellbeing at the forefront of what we do.”

Global online furniture retailer Wayfair Inc. has announced Muse, its latest innovation in personalised home shopping.

Designed to give customers an easy way to find inspiration and ideas for their homes, Muse transforms how customers discover, personalise, and shop for their dream spaces.

Building on the success of Decorify, Wayfair’s previous pilot application that allowed customers to select from a few preset styles to see how their space could be transformed, Muse takes it further to provide a trove of inspiration and ideas to build their aspirational home.

Muse focuses on a heavily visual browsing experience letting users quickly navigate through rich imagery, search for any style that comes to mind, and explore or apply styles to build personalised collections.

“At Wayfair, our goal is to make it easy to create a home that is just right for you, and Muse delivers on that promise,” said Fiona Tan, chief technology officer at Wayfair. “Leveraging generative AI, we aim to elevate our search experience to be the best in the home category – seamlessly blending inspiration and shopping – to reaffirm our position as the premier destination for all things home.”

Muse links inspiration to Wayfair’s extensive catalog, offering shoppable suggestions and complementary items for a cohesive look.

“The home category is heavily visual and highly personal, and most people want to start their home personalisation journey by simply browsing for ideas,” said Shrenik Sadalgi, director of research and development at Wayfair.

“Muse serves that need and is an endless inspiration engine giving customers the ability to spark an idea, bring their unique visions to life and even transform their existing spaces – all enabled by AI. Muse fosters inspiration and helps you create a home that feels uniquely yours.”

Life has thrown its fair share of challenges at this family. The parent group behind online furniture retailer Furniturebox has reported a growth in sales, driven by its launch in the US and new distribution hub.

According to the latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 July 2024, total sales rose 20.6% to £25.6m from £21.2m in 2023.

UK sales increased slightly to £18.9m from £18.7m, while EU revenues rose to £707,000 from £349,000. Rest of the world sales grew from £2.1m to £5.9m.

Pre-tax profit resulted at £444,000, significantly improving from a loss of £1.1m recorded the previous year. Gross profit margin was up 5.5% to 29.42%.

Stated within its report, the company said: “The 2023-2024 financial year marked our second full year operating from the Chippenham distribution centre. We continued to shift from foundational consolidation to focused growth initiatives. With our teams and structures now well-aligned, we initiated several key projects aimed at enhancing our market position and operational efficiency.

“Significant additions were made to our team; including a Financial Director, Head of Product, HR Manager, and Data analyst. These additions have strengthened our ability to scale and adapt, representing a pivotal step toward a robust and sustainable growth platform.

“While the prior year brought relative stability to the supply chain, this year presented new challenges, particularly disruptions driven by conflicts in the Middle East. These challenges led to shipping delays and rising costs, which placed pressure on our margins. However, our strong supplier relationships and proactive planning mitigated some of the adverse impacts.

“Domestically, the environment remained complex, shaped by political elections, slow economic growth, elevated interest rates, and persistent cost of living concerns. Despite these headwinds, our adaptability and resilience have positioned us to navigate this dynamic landscape while maintaining focus on our long-term growth strategy.

“We have continued to see sales in the US go from strength to strength, growing by 179%. We have launched over 100 products in the market, set up a US compliance testing framework, and expanded our reach through Amazon US.”

Global flooring manufacturer Mohawk Industries, Inc. has reported a growth in fourth quarter sales while full year revenues were down.

According to its latest Q4 trading update, net sales were $2.6bn, an increase of 1% versus the prior year. Fourth quarter 2024 net earnings were $93m down from $139.4m.

For the year ended 31 December 2024, total sales fell 2.7% to $10.8bn from $11.1bn in 2023. Net earnings stood at $517.7m, improving from a loss of $439.5m.

Commenting on the Company’s fourth quarter and full year, Chairman and CEO Jeff Lorberbaum stated: “Our fourth quarter results exceeded our expectations as sales actions, restructuring initiatives and productivity improvements benefited our performance.

“Additionally, the negative sales impact from U.S. hurricanes was limited to approximately $10 million. While residential demand remained soft in our markets, our product introductions last year and our marketing initiatives contributed to our sales performance around the globe.

“The fourth quarter environment was an extension of conditions our industry faced throughout last year. Consumers continued to limit large discretionary purchases, and consumer confidence remained constrained by cumulative inflation, economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions. During 2024, home sales around the world stayed suppressed, U.S. homeowners remained locked in place with low mortgage rates, and existing U.S. home sales fell to a 30-year low.

“Central banks in the U.S., Europe and other regions lowered interest rates during the later part of last year, though the impact on housing turnover was negligible in most regions. New home construction was also constrained across the world, with higher home costs and interest rates impacting starts. Throughout the year, investments in the commercial sector slowed, though they remained stronger than residential remodelling.

“These factors reduced market demand and created heightened industry competition for volume. This also resulted in greater unabsorbed overhead and temporary shutdown costs as we managed production and inventory. Given these conditions, we focused on stimulating sales with innovative new products, marketing actions and promotional programs.

“Last year, we initiated significant restructuring actions and operational improvements that are lowering our costs and will benefit our longer-term results. Through these actions, we delivered an increase of approximately 6% in full-year adjusted earnings per share despite a soft market. We ended the year with available liquidity of approximately $1.6 billion and debt leverage of 1.1 times. We are well positioned to manage this market cycle, pursue opportunities for long-term profitable growth and emerge stronger when housing markets improve.

“Our industry has been in a cyclical downturn for multiple years, and we are confident that our markets will return to historical levels, though the inflection point remains unpredictable. We expect ongoing softness in all our markets during the first quarter due to elevated interest rates and weakness in housing.

“Intense competition for volume will continue to pressure our pricing, though our mix should benefit from our differentiated products launched last year, premium collections and our commercial offering. Increased material and labour costs will reduce our margins in the quarter, as we can only partially pass through the higher costs to the market. Our businesses are finding additional ways to reduce expenses and improve processes, which will help to reduce the impact of higher input costs.”

Unrivaled, presented by Samsung Galaxy, has announced a multi-year naming rights partnership with Wayfair, establishing Unrivaled’s home for games in Miami as Wayfair Arena.

The retailer also becomes the league’s Official Home Furnishing Partner. Wayfair has provided furnishing throughout the facilities, including Unrivaled’s content studio, the Samsung Galaxy Courtside Club, and the players’ lounge, with the goal of creating a welcoming space for players and fans to feel most at home.

“At Wayfair, we make it easy to create a home that is just right for you, and we are thrilled to partner with Unrivaled to create a home away from home for these incredible athletes,” said Kara O’Brien, Head of Brand Marketing, Wayfair.

Global mattress manufacturer Tempur Sealy International, Inc. has announced that it expects to close the acquisition of beds retailer Mattress Firm imminently.

Tempur Sealy said it intends to close the deal, which was previously announced back in May 2023, on Wednesday 5 February 2025.

This follows the ruling from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas denying the motion by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for a preliminary injunction to halt the closing of the proposed acquisition.

The FTC has indicated that it will not seek emergency relief from the Fifth Circuit and will not prevent the transaction from closing.

Tempur Sealy Chairman and CEO Scott Thompson commented: “We are excited to move forward with our combination with Mattress Firm, which creates the leading vertically integrated global bedding company and which we strongly believe will bring significant benefits to all of our stakeholders.”

Since opening its doors in 1973, Woodshed Furniture has been a go-to spot in Lacey, Washington, for quality craftsmanship and friendly service. Starting out with unfinished solid wood furniture, the store has grown over the years into a trusted place for custom pieces, finished designs, and comfy upholstered furniture—all with a personal touch.

It all started in 1973 when the original owner opened the store, offering sturdy, unfinished wood furniture. In 1987, Ned and Lynda Hart took over, adding their own flair and expanding the store’s offerings to include custom and finished furniture. They helped build the store’s reputation as a trusted local business.

In 2011, siblings Jed Hart and Trisha Claridge stepped up and bought the business from their parents. Around this time, they also started offering upholstered furniture to give customers even more options. Together, they’ve kept the family spirit alive while bringing fresh ideas to the store.

For Jed, running Woodshed Furniture has always been about more than just selling furniture. “Family is everything,” he shares, and that connection is clear in how the store operates. Over the years, Jed’s kids learned invaluable lessons about running a business by spending time in the store. While they’re now grown, Jed cherishes the flexibility the business gave him to coach their soccer and baseball teams as they were growing up. This balance between business and family values remains at the heart of what makes Woodshed Furniture special.

“We love offering pieces that stand the test of time,” says Jed. The store’s collection of Amish-made furniture represents true heirloom quality, blending classic design with exceptional durability. Each piece showcases the skill and dedication of its makers, perfectly reflecting Woodshed Furniture’s commitment to providing only the finest craftsmanship for their customers.

Woodshed Furniture also caters to a wide range of customers, offering a variety of styles and price points. Whether you’re after a standout piece or something practical, they’ve got options to fit your style and budget.

From unfinished wood furniture to custom designs and upholstery, Woodshed Furniture’s focus has always been on what works best for their customers. They’re all about making the furniture-buying experience easy, personalized, and enjoyable.

Whether you need a standout piece for your living room, a cozy sofa, or a dining set that brings people together, Woodshed Furniture has you covered. Their dedication to quality and service means you’re getting furniture you’ll love for years.

For over 50 years, Woodshed Furniture has been proud to be part of the Lacey community. Jed and Trisha are passionate about keeping the legacy going, creating great furniture, and building meaningful relationships along the way.
